celebrated on April 20, 1947. Here it celebrated its tenth anniversary

When the Council was instituted temporary quarters were obtained from
the I. 0. 0. F. lodge, where the Council still meets. Late in the
summer of 1947 the Council presented a picnic in Forrest Park. A
large fireworks display and a pageant depicting the arrival of Columbus
in the New World were the features of the day.

John
Roe Council 3020, Kansas City
John Roe Council 3020 in Kansas City was instituted December 1, 1946.
The Council is named for John Roe (1824-1920), a Catholic cattleman of
Johnson County, who was outstanding for his Charity and sterling Christian
life. Its first officers were: Grand Knight, Bernard J. Brungardt;
Deputy Grand Knight, Richard A. Flucke; Financial Secretary, George F.
Marx; Recording Secretary, James E. Wavada; Treasurer, Leo A. Kemper; Warden,
James D. Murphy; Advocate, Walter Fuller, Jr.; Chancellor, Martin L. McGraw;
Chaplain, Rev. Herman J. Koch; Inside Guard, Amos B. Riley; Outside Guards,
Jimmie Tank, Carl Smith; Trustees, J. Frank Schepers, G. Maurice Reno,
Carl Brandmeyer; Lecturer, Frank E. Stewart.
The Council has grown with great rapidity. Even during the period
of organization about a hundred and eighty men requested the privilege
of being its organizers. This included a group of nearly a hundred
candidates who had not taken the degrees. In the year 1947-48 the
Council won membership in the Century Club. Eight members who had
transferred from other councils have received their Twenty-five Year buttons.
One of the first projects initiated under the Catholic Activity program
was the observance of a monthly hour of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament
at the Convent of Perpetual Adoration. This promises to be a perpetual
project and members attend regularly. Attendance without breaks has
entitled a number of members to the emblems of the Eucharistic Guard.
Another project which may become permanent is the vigil at St. Agnes church
through the night of Holy Thursday. A similar vigil was held before
the feast of the Sacred Heart. Holy Communion in a body is faithfully
observed quarterly. The members meet at the various parishes in rotation.
This is always followed by a breakfast at which there is usually a speaker.
The Council has a blood donors group. On one occasion forty-two pints
were donated to the Wadsworth Veterans Hospital.
The Council maintains a vigorous social program featuring informal mixers
with games and dancing. The usual Christmas party for the children
has been enlarged to include children from the orphans' homes in Kansas
City. The athletic program features baseball and bowling. The
Council baseball team played in a Knights of Columbus loop in greater Kansas
City. The Council bowling league usually has eight teams. In
the Knights of Columbus State tournament it won the singles championship
in 1948 and the state tournament in 1949.
Bernard J. Brungardt was Grand Knight of the Council from 1946 to 1948,
and is the present State Secretary. Leo A. Kemper was elected Grand
Knight in 1948.
The present officers are: Grand Knight, Leo A. Kemper; Deputy Grand
Knight, Louis F. Siebers; Chancellor, James B. Tank; Recorder, Geo. S.
McAnany, Jr.; Financial Secretary, George F. Marx; Treasurer, George A.
Fox; Lecturer, John H. Smith; Advocate, Clarence Sloan; Warden, Maurice
Livingstone; Inside Guards, Ralph Sprung, Joseph Lawrence; Outside Guards,
Edward LaCroix, Louis P. Schmiedeler; Trustees, Alfonso A. Navarro, Walter
Fuller, Jr., George A. Lucas; Chaplain, Rev. John J. Ryan.
The Council has 341 members at present, 71 insurance and 270 associate.
Atwood-Beardsley
Council 3033, Atwood
Atwood-Beardsley Council 3033 was established February 9, 1947. Its
history really begins in 1924 when the Knights of that neighborhood built
a hall beside St. John's church north of Beardsley. The hall is of
brick construction, thirty-five by ninety feet with a full basement. The
men who built the hall organized a St. John's Club of the Knights of Columbus
which was a subsidiary of Herndon Council 1845. It had a president,
a treasurer, and a financial secretary who collected the dues from the
members and forwarded them to the Financial Secretary of Herndon Council.
Due to unwise financing the hall remained under a heavy debt and the
membership declined from about ninety to twenty. However, under the
wise guidance of their chaplain, Reverend Meis, O.F.M. Cap., this group
undertook to pay off the debt. Finally, the harvest festival sponsored
by them in August, 1946, raised the last of the money needed to liquidate
the debt and the way was clear to the realization of their dream of a Knights
of Columbus Council of their own. At the institution of the Council
twenty-three candidates were initiated. State Deputy Clarence Malone
and State Secretary Jack Dowd were present to represent the State Council.
The first officers were: Grand Knight, Glen M. Williams; Deputy Grand
Knight, Anselm Sramek; Chaplain, Rev. Camillus Schmitt, O.F.M.; Treasurer,
Elmer Burk; Financial Secretary, John Pitner; Recorder, Vincent Prochazka;
Chancellor, Joseph Prochazka; Advocate, Frank R. Ruda; Warden, Anton Sramek;
Inside Guard, John Faimon; Outside Guard, Charles Orten; Trustees, Edward
Faimon, Edward Sramek, Sidney Bliss.
The Council sponsors a Father-and-Son banquet, and in turn the members
serve the Mother-and-Daughter breakfast. The members gather for Communion
breakfasts, a day of recollection, and the night of vigil on Holy Thursday.
A sound projector has been purchased for the showing of educational films.
A four thousand dollar start toward a parochial school was a by-product
of the retirement of the debt on the Knights of Columbus hall. The
harvest festival marks the high point of the year's social activity.
The Council meets alternately at Beardsley and Atwood.
The present officers of the Council are: Grand Knight, Joe W. Prochazka;
Deputy Grand Knight, Frank E. Sramek; Chancellor, Glen Williams; Recorder,
Charles Pianalto; Financial Secretary, Stanley Faimon; Treasurer, Edward
Sramek; Lecturer, Vincent Prochazka; Advocate, Leon Williams; Warden, Richard
Faimon; Inside Guard, Frank Holub; Outside Guard, Paul Kopriva; Trustees,

The Council has participated fully in the Knights of Columbus Five Point
Program of activity. A monthly newsletter strengthens the bonds of
fraternity and acts of fraternal charity such as the Memorial Service for
deceased members are carefully observed. Its members' spiritual welfare
is fostered by quarterly reception of Holy Communion in a body, followed
by a breakfast. The Council provides a lively social program for
its members and their families, and at the same time aids the community's
recreational program by sponsoring both a bowling team and a boys' baseball
team. It is affiliated with the National Council of Catholic Men
and supports its many works.

The first year's activities were largely organizational. Since
then the Council's activities have been greatly expanded, furnishing a
room in the new hospital, sponsoring the Boy Scout troop, assuming certain
expenses and furnishing labor for the erection of the Boy Scout cabin,
and helping repair the school. The Council sponsors a junior baseball
team, basketball, and an adult team. The baseball program is the
special effort of our new Assistant Pastor, Father Frank Lubeley.
Our youngsters' team has developed into a pretty good ball club.
The Council helped defray the expenses and secured trophies for the league
tournament. The K. of C. Bowling Team ranked second in the league
during the last bowling season, and we will have a team for the coming
season. Brother Buford Egbert deserves special mention for his work
in promoting many of these activities.
Our Communion Breakfasts are held periodically, approximately six during
the winter months. A Day of Recollection will be held later in the
fall.
