Through the years the Council has been active in civic and charitable
works. It has contributed regularly to the National Council of Catholic
Men, Father Flanagan's Boys' Town, the American Red Cross and the USO.
It furnished a room in the Ellsworth Hospital and made a substantial donation
to St. Anthony's Hospital in Hays. It gives a treat to all the children
of the parish at Christmas time each year. It has a baseball team
and a bowling team. It subscribes to Our Sunday Visitor and America
for the Wilson Public Library. A blood donor's group was formed several
years ago, and many members have since given blood. Dr. Frank A.
Dlabal, who did the typing, served as chairman of the Kansas State Blood
Donors group of the Order for five years from 1939 to 1944. The Council
was honored in having its Chaplain, Rev. John F. McManus, serve as National
Chaplain of the American Legion for the 1943-44 term. He was also
elected Chaplain of the Kansas Department of the Legion five times.
He has been Chaplain of the Wilson Post of the Legion continuously since
coming to Wilson in 1928. He is also active in Red Cross and Boy
Scout work.
The Council celebrated its silver anniversary on Sunday, October 10,
1943. Chaplain Rev. John F. McManus celebrated the Solemn Mass in
St. Wenceslaus' Church. He was assisted by Rev. Edwin Dorzweiler,
O.F.M. Cap., and Rev. Edward Sanders. At the Communion breakfast
which followed, Emmet Blaes, State Deputy, was the main speaker.
Each year since that date Columbus Day is observed with a Solemn High Mass,
followed by a Communion breakfast and program, and a dance in the evening.
Every three months the members receive Holy Communion corporately.

The Council purchased its own building in June, 1924. There it
has a large assembly room and comfortable club rooms. It was one
of the first councils in the state to form a blood donors group.
A large percentage of the members belong to it and they have given a great
number of transfusions. An Honorary Life Membership pin was presented
to Henry Demars, Sr., at a special ceremony in 1946. At the same
time a number of Honorary Membership pins were presented.
The Council has always had an active athletic program. It sponsors
baseball and basketball teams, provides the trophy for the winner of the
high school baseball tournament, and furnishes uniforms for the Catholic
high school team. It also has special Polio and Christmas parties,
many dances, and other social gatherings. Another outstanding event
in the year is the annual Easter Sunday Communion and breakfast, which
is always attended by ninety percent of the active members. The Council
takes particular pride in the fact that it has over eighty percent of the
eligible men of the community as members.

The Council has always been active in civic and charitable works.
It furnished a room in St. Luke's hospital in El Dorado, donated generously
to the building fund for St. John's school and to the endowment fund of
St. Mary's College. It has contributed regularly toward the support
of the Catholic Hour, the National Council of Catholic Men, Father Flanagan's
Boys' Town, the American Red Cross, and to the USO. It has regularly
sponsored a junior baseball team in the El Dorado playground program, and
sent a boy to the Sunflower Boys' State in Wichita. In 1924 the Council
brought Peter Collins to El Dorado to help counteract the bigotry of the
Ku Klux Klan. To further the spiritual life of the community it sponsored
a series of weekly lectures by out-of-town speakers during Lent of 1940,
and since that year has met monthly for corporate reception of Holy Communion,
followed by a Communion breakfast. As the representative organization
of Catholic laymen it has assisted at dedications and given honor to jubilarians.
Last, but not least in the eyes of the children of St. John's school, is
the Christmas party to which they look forward each year.
The highlight of the Council's history was the celebration of its silver
jubilee on Sunday, June 9, 1946. The State Chaplain, Rev. Matthew
Hall, O.S.B., celebrated the Solemn Mass in St. John's Church. The
toastmaster of the jubilee banquet was the Very Rev. T. J. O'Sullivan,
pastor of Blessed Sacrament church in Wichita, who had been pastor of St.
John's Church twenty-five years before, and had actively encouraged the
organization of the Council. He was one of its charter members, and
served as its chaplain until transferred to Wichita. The principal
speaker at the banquet was a Supreme Director of the Knights of Columbus,
John F. Martin of Oklahoma City. The climax of the celebration was
the presentation of life membership and twenty-five year membership pins
to surviving charter members. The jubilee year also saw the Council
installed in new council and clubrooms in the Aikman building.
The Grand Knights of the Council have been: Fred A. Pielsticker, 1921-23,
deceased. He was an outstanding citizen, and at the time of his death
was vice-president and general manager of the refining division of the
Skelly Oil Company. Edward Kelly, 1923-24, deceased; C. A. Mason,

Cardinal Gibbons Council 2352 at Ransom was instituted May 5, 1922.
A year before this D. B. O'Neill, Philip Landwehr, Martin Schreiber, Albert
Schreiber, William Roths, F. P. Roths, H, A. Kennedy, and Edward Spade,
all Knights of Columbus living around Ransom and members of various councils
decided to gather a group of new members as the first step toward the organization
of a Council at Ransom. As a consequence Joseph Gronniger, Joseph
Kraus, Albert Kraus, Martin Jacek, Florian Poss, C. F. Kraus, John W. Luetters,

The Council has always been active in civic and charitable works.
It furnished a side altar for St. Anthony's Church when it was completed
in 1925. From 1936 to 1938, the Council sponsored the "Shepherd's

towns along the Rock Island Railroad, both east and west of Fowler.
During the years 1925 to 1928, it organized a Council at Sitka, Kansas,
which was later moved to Ashland, Kansas. A large number of brothers
from Fowler were present at the installation of its first officers.
In 1929, the Council helped organize a D. of I. Circle and served at a
banquet in its honor. Again in February, 1946, it organized a council
at Plains, Kansas. The Plains Council now has a larger membership
than Fowler.

Church once a month. The Council has a day of recollection once a
year and an annual pilgrimage to the Catholic churches in Topeka on the
last Sunday of the year. Every fifth Sunday is Council Corporate
Communion Sunday alternating at all the churches. A High Mass for
departed Brothers is offered once a year. All departed Brothers of
the Council have been enrolled as perpetual members of Society of the Propagation
of the Faith. There is an annual donation for the education of a
student to the priesthood. The Council is now organizing a Circle
of Columbian Squires. There are about twenty dances a year for members
