Message From State Master of Kansas

Knights of Columbus
Fourth Degree
District of Kansas

January 1, 2005

State Master George Miller Worthy Faithful Navigator and Sir Knight:

For those of you who may not know me, I am George E. Miller and I have succeeded John L. Kasper as District Master of Kansas. I am a Past State Deputy of Kansas and look forward to working with your assembly and promoting the Fourth Degree in the District of Kansas.

This news letter is to communicate with each assembly through you, as Faithful Navigator, news and up coming events of interest to the Fourth Degree.

Serving Those Who Served program for Veterans program is up and running at the VA hospitals with appointments of VAVS Representatives for the VA hospitals in Leavenworth, Topeka and Wichita. I would like to thank the Joseph D. Hurley assembly, Leavenworth, the James W. Gibbons Assembly, Topeka and the Columbia Assembly of Wichita along with Bishop Mark K. Carroll Assembly of Derby for taking on this worthy project.

On Veterans Day the Fourth Degree was represented by a Honor Guard of 27 Sir Knights from 12 councils and 5 Assemblies at the 2nd Annual Military Pilgrimage to Pilsen to pray for Father Emil Kapaun, not only that he will be honored by sainthood, but that his story of ultimate sacrifice will motivate young men to study for the priesthood. A special thank you to Ken Heithaus, PFN and Commander of the Color Guard of Columbia Assembly, for his leadership and organization of the honor guard for this great event. Also I would like to thank the Sir Knights that took part in the honor guard. Lt Col. (retired) Richard Daise, the US Army coordinator for the event and also a Sir Knight, would also like to thank the Knights for their participation in the event.

The next event will be the Annual March For Life, January 21, 2005, in Topeka. The march annually commemorates the anniversary of the United States Supreme Court's infamous Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion on January 22, 1973. Hundreds of Knights from across Kansas will join others who will be on hand for two reasons: to show their support of family life and to practice their rights to assemble and protest inhuman acts to the unborn.

The March for Life rally will begin at 10:00 AM at Assumption Church with a prayer service. Walkers prepare to march towards the south steps of the State Capitol at 10:15 AM. All Knights and, in particular, the Fourth Degree Sir Knights in their Color Guard Regalia are urged to join the march. Knights should carry council and assembly banners and Knights of Columbus posters, Knights not in regalia should wear jackets or hats with the Knights of Columbus emblems and walk together to show the Order's support for the right to life.

Up coming 4th Degree Exemplifications will be held as follows:

  • March 5, 2005 in Salina
  • April 16, 2005 in Garden City
  • June 18, 2005 in Lenexa (Kansas City Area).

We need a good turn out at all these Degrees. I would encourage your assembly to recruit new Sir Knights for these Exemplifications; only through recruitment of new Sir Knights will your assembly remain strong and active today and in the future.

I would like to wish you and the Sir Knights of your assembly a prosperous, holy New Year.

Fraternally,

George E. Miller
